A National Teaching Award and a New Associate Dean: SUPA Faculty Liaisons Recognized

Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) faculty liaisons do more than guide partner school instructors through Syracuse University courses. Two of them were recently recognized for their work across the University and beyond.

Jason R. Wiles, a biology professor in the College of Arts and Sciences and SUPA faculty liaison for biology, has received the 2026 Outstanding Undergraduate Science Teaching Award. It is the top honor given by the Society for College Science Teaching. The award was announced at the National Science Teaching Association’s annual conference in Anaheim, California, and recognizes teaching excellence, scholarship and service. In selecting Wiles, the society highlighted his “dynamic, student-centered approach” built on active learning, critical thinking and open dialogue.

Then there’s Gregory Hoke, the Jessie Page Heroy Professor and chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and SUPA faculty liaison for earth science. Hoke has been named associate dean for creativity, scholarship and research for the College of Arts and Sciences. In the two-year role, which began July 1, he will work with faculty across the College to grow research funding and support interdisciplinary collaboration.

“I’m excited to be in a position where I’ll be able to facilitate research and creative work across the College,” Hoke says.

Congratulations to both.
